Commonwealth Games 2014: Indian boxers Vijender Singh, Devendro Laishram and Mandeep Jangra reach quarters

Glasgow, July 28 (IANS) Indian boxers Vijender Singh and Devendro Laishram proceeded to the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games in their respective categories on Monday.

However, it was the end of the road for Shiva Thapa who lost his men's 56 kg Round of 16 bout 0-3 to Northern Ireland's Michael Conlam.

Devendro gave a good start to India in the discipline on Monday as he won his men's 49 kg Round of 16 bout against Madhushan Gamage of Sri Lanka 3-0.

While the Olympic quarter-finalist won his first two rounds with identical scores of 29-28 from the judges, he notched up a perfect 30-27 score in the third round. The Manipuri will take on Scottish Aqeel Ahmed in the last eight on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Vijender also won his men's 75 kg Round of 16 match in an emphatic manner as he impressed the judges with his skills to win all three rounds with the same scoreline of 30-27 against Namibia's Mujandjae Kasuto.

The Olympic bronze medallist will take on Aaron Prince of Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday.

Mandeep Jangra beat Kestna Davis in the men's 69 kg Round of 16 later in the day. The Haryana lad posted identical scores of 30-27 as he beat the Jamaican 3-0. He will take on Australia’s Daniel Lewis in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
