Commonwealth Games 2014: Impressive Mandeep Jangra sails into second round

Mandeep Jangra

India’s Mandeep Jangra advanced to the second round of the men’s welterweight category (69-kg) defeating Mozambique’s Augusto Mathule.

The 21- year-old Haryana lad – ranked number twelve in the world – hit the groove and landed some lethal right punches to push his Mozambique opponent on the backfoot in the first round.

Mandeep slowed down in the second round before reserving his best for the third and final round, unleashing a nice blend of right and left punches on Matale to seal an impressive win. The Indian, who is a 2013 Asian Championship silver medallist, will now face Jamaica’s Kestna Davis in the second round.

Mandeep’s win was some solace for the Indian boxing camp on the opening day of competition after Parveen Kumar earlier lost to Scotland’s Roy Henderson in the super heavyweight (+91 kg) category bout. The Sonepat- born boxer failed to come on top of the local pugilist and was shown the tournament exit door.
