Devendro, Vijender among three Indian boxers in CWG 2014 semis

Three Indian men boxers joined two of their female counterparts in the medal round of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. 2008 Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh, 2012 London Olympics quarterfinalist Laishram Devendro Singh and Mandeep Jangra reached the semifinals of their respective weight categories.

Vijender, who won a bronze in the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games, outboxed Aaron Prince of Trinidad & Tobago in the middle weight category (75 kg) and will next face Northern Ireland’s Connor Coyle.

Laishram Devendro Singh made it to the last-four stage, accounting for Aqeel Ahmed of Scotland, and will next face Ashley Williams of Wales for a final berth.

Mandeep got a walkover from his Australian opponent Daniel Lewis in the welter weight category (69 kg) and will play Northern Ireland’s Stephen Donnelly.

Earlier, two women boxers – Pinki Jangra and L Sarita Devi romped into the semifinals of the fly and light weight categories respectively.
