Indian boxers disappoint at Women's World Boxing Championships

Sarjubala Devi

In the absence of champion boxer Mary Kom and Asian Games bronze medallist Sarita Devi, the responsibility to carry India’s flag at the World Boxing Championships was handed to several youngsters. Unfortunately, the Indians were unable to flourish in Jeju City, South Korea, winnings only two medals overall.

India’s best hope, Sarjubala Devi won India the silver medal after reaching the final in the light flyweight category. She was beaten by Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazhakistan in the final. Despite the defeat, the 21-year-old has a long road ahead of her and promises to have a great future.

India’s only other finalist was Saweety who won the silver medal in the light heavyweight category. The Indian boxer was beaten by Yang Xiaoli of China in the final.

Overall it was a very disappointing performance following the Asian Games succes where the women won one gold and three bronze medals.
