Indian boxers may finally fight under the tricolour as AIBA approves elections for boxing governing body

She will be one of the boxers who heave a breath of relief

Some headway has been made in rescuing Indian boxing from its administrative quagmire as the International Amateur Boxing Association, AIBA, has given the green light to hold elections for a new national governing body for the sport, reports IBNLive.

Indian boxing has been without a sovereign, official governing body since May of this year, when Boxing India was suspended following a no-confidence motion filed against erstwhile President Sandeep Jajodia and Secretary General Jay Kowli by the different state units.

Kishen Narsi, chairman of the AIBA-appointed ad-hoc committee, said,”Based on an ad-hoc committee report, AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, in due consultation and agreement with AIBA Executive Committee Bureau, has now directed the ad-hoc Committee to organise Elections for a new National Federation with cooperation of all the national stakeholders. The first step to that would be holding a General Assembly as soon as possible in which the Constitution would be passed and sent for AIBA's approval .”

Narsi added that the next step would be to invite interested parties to put forward their names in being part of the to-be-formed body, but those will exclude those from Boxing India. Said Narsi, “The next step would be to invite nominations from those interested in being part of the new federation. The BI has played it's role. They tried to run things their way but it did not work out to everybody's satisfaction. Hopefully it won't be the case this time because a lot would depend on the extent of cooperation that member states would show towards each other.”

Narsi said that the next General Assembly meeting is imminent, but steered clear of commenting on whether there will be a positive resolution before the 2016 Rio Olympics in July: “It all boils down to intent. If there is a will to resolve the matter and ensure that boxers don't suffer, I am sure a solution can be found in a day. So let's see how things go and what sort of attitude people adopt.”

AIBA has instructed the ad-hoc committee to convey all the details about the agenda, the candidates and delegates and the election process well in advance of the elections, for review purposes.

The ad-hoc committee has consented to the AIBA Coordination Committee’s decision to commence the next year with national meets and has also drafted a provisional calendar of events for 2016.
