Mary Kom to miss World Championships

Mary to focus on Olympics

Five-time World Champion Mary Kom will not be competing in the World Championships starting next month. The Incheon Asian Games gold medallist will not be travelling to Jeju Island in South Korea for the showpiece event that is scheduled to take place from November 13-25.

Pinki Jangra, who beat Mary in the Commonwealth Games trials earlier this year will take her place. Jangra settled for bronze in Glasgow. Mary is choosing her tournaments carefully and will focus on her fitness to be ready for the 2016 Rio Olympics. "Mary Kom has decided not to participate in every competition that takes place. Given her age she wants to participate in selective tournaments only to increase her career span," a source revealed.

“Boxing is very demanding. Not only does it require mental toughness, but physical endurance as well. This is the prime reason she has decided to skip the world championships as there is not even an Olympic spot at stake. After an exhausting Asian Games, she decided to take a break," the source added.

Other boxers are training hard

Mary’s coach Lenin Metei confirmed to a leading daily that she is not attending the training camp in Delhi. "No we are not training. She needs to get her fitness back and hence she has not joined the on-going training camp in Delhi. I don't see her participating in the Jeju event," Metei said.

Boxing India haven’t got a confirmation from Mary so far even though the training camp started on October 24. "I have no knowledge about her decision to skip the world championships. I can only say that the camp began on October 24 and Mary Kom is yet to report," India women's coach Anup Kumar said.

Kumar said that Indian boxers had a good chance at the World Championships despite missing out on the services of Mary Kom and suspended boxer Sarita Devi. "We have a very good chance of doing well in the world championships. The girls are experienced and working with the aim of finishing on the podium. Recently, Boxing India officials attended the camp and explained the new scoring system to the boxers. They explained, in detail, where a boxer wins or loses a point during the bout," Anup said.
