CWG medal winning boxer Jai Bhagwan suspended by Haryana Police for taking bribes

Two time Asian Championships medalist and 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medal winner, Jai Bhagwan has been suspended by the Haryana Police for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs one lakh from three persons, who were arrested by him last month in Hisar.

The boxer and another constable Anil Kumar were placed under suspension by Hisar district police Chief Satender Kumar Gupta on Tuesday, following an enquiry by the Police.

He said, “After the initial probe Jai Bhagwan and Anil Kumar have been suspended. I will not like to comment further on the matter untill a regular probe is done.”

Constable Anil had arrested the three accused under Gambling Act on August 31. Within 12 hours they were released after allegedly paying the bribe amount.

One of the arrested gamblers, a businessman, had approached police with a complaint against Jai Bhagwan.

He alleged that Bhagwan was demanding Rs ten thousand more through constable Anil Kumar even after the earlier payment of Rs.1 lakh was made to him as bribe to release the gamblers.

Another Police official added," the three businessman contacted the police stating that Jai Bhagwan had asked for Rs 10,000 through Anil. After being questioned, they produced evidence through audio clips of their conversations.

In August 2012, Jai Bhagwan lost to Kazakh fighter Gani Zhailauov at the London Olympics in the pre-quarterfinals of the men's 60 kg category Along with this he was honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2014.

Jai Bhagwan was on TV in 2011 when he appeared in a reality game show, hosted by Shahrukh Khan, Zor Ka Jhatka: Total Wipeout.

It is not the first time that a boxer from Haryana has been amidst controversies. Earlier 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medallist Vijender Singh's name had cropped up in the a drug peddling case in Punjab. Interestingly Vijender also hails from Haryana.

Bhagwan defended Vijender Singh that time by saying that Singh has no connection with the drug haul case in the state and ab Police trying to implicate him in a false case.
