Vikash Malik stuns World No. 8 to enter quarterfinals of the World Championships

Vikash Malik, who is the reigning lightweight champion caused a huge upset in the pre-quarters of the World Championships as he stunned the World No. 8 and 5th seeded Hungarian boxer Miklos Varga 3-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the World Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Vikash was in supreme touch as he completely outclassed his Hungarian component. The individual scoreline read 30-27 29-28 29-28 in favor of the Indian boxer.

With this win Vikash Malik became the 3rd Indian boxer after Shiva Thapa (56kg) and Manoj Kumar (64kg) to enter the last 8 of the tournament.

Vikash again had a tough task in the next round as he will take on the World No. 7 and 4th seeded Conceicao Robson of Brazil to book his place in the last 4. This bout will take place tomorrow. A win in the quarters will assure Vikash of at least a bronze medal in this mega-event.

Later in the day Sumit Sangwan (81kg) will take on the 8th seed Siarhai Novikau of Belarus while Satish Kumar (91+kg) will lock horns with Yan Sudzilouski. If Satish manages to win the bout then he could well face the World No. 2 local favorite Ivan Dychko in the next round.

Due to provisional suspension imposed on Indian Boxing Federation, the country’s pugilists are competing in the Championships under the banner of International Boxing Association (AIBA).
