The 5 best one-liners from Harsha Bhogle

Harsha Bhogle

Harsha Bhogle is India’s favourite commentator by many a mile. His witty responses from the commentary box makes one question if they are indeed watching cricket. Such is his authority over words that other famous commentators often think twice before they can say anything in his presence. His love and knowledge about cricket is evident through his expert criticism of the game even though he has never played the game professionally. Here’s a small list of his 5 best one-liners. #1 Background : India v England Champions Trophy Final, Edgbaston 2013.

Michael Atherton in the commentary box, surprised by the huge number of Indian fans in the stadium, remarks, “It is England but India has more support in the stadium, and the pitch is completely assisting your spinners. Says a lot about our hospitality, right?”

To which Bhogle immediately responds, “Well.. we let you rule our nation for so many years. I believe that's the least you can do for us.”#2 Harsha Bhogle was hosting an ICC awards event and he called on Jonty Rhodes to present one of the awards. So as Jonty began climbing down the stairs and walking towards the stage, Harsha exclaimed, “It’s pretty unusual to see Jonty walk down the stairs, I thought he might slide down them!”

#3 During the summer of 2014, when the FIFA World Cup was on, and India were touring England, Nasser Hussain tried to take a dig at India, saying how they couldn’t even participate in the football World Cup. Bhogle was quick in responding, “Well Nasser, our boys decided not to participate in the World Cup instead of getting knocked out in the first round, without winning a game.”

#4 England bowler Jade Dernbach was bowling well in one of the games against India and Harsha did not hesitate to appreciate the bowler. He cleverly delivers, “Jade Dernbach has got the perfect credentials to play for England-born and brought up in South Africa!”

#5 In Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell Test in Mumbai, Sachin had just come out to bat in the first innings. He took his time in the crease and played some safe shots, before he hit a couple of boundaries. Harsha at this stage sums up the atmosphere in one sentence, “Sachin playing well and looking very positive; I think that couple of fours he hit settled the nerves, I’m talking about the nerves of each and every person in the crowd!”
