Alastair Cook: England need to find a way to play Indian spinners

Alastair Cook

England skipper Alastair Cook has said that he wants the English batsmen to play Indian spinners better, after India spun England out in the third ODI at Trent Bridge taking a lead of 2-0 in the five one-day series in the process.

England began well scoring 82 for no loss before Indian spinners knocked them down and the hosts were bundled out for 227. India chased the score without much hassle and won by 6 wickets.

The Indian spinners were right on top of English batsmen as Ravichandran Ashwin took 3 for 39, while part-timers Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayadu took one wicket each.

England need to play spin better

Cook after the six-wicket defeat at Trent Bridge pointed out that England need to find a way out to play spinners so that they could get enough runs on the board for the opposition team.

The 20-year-old, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "We got off to another good start, 80 for none, and we expected to make more. (Spin) is something we need to keep trying to work on, we're not doing it right.

"I think the ball spun off the pitch more in the morning than it did in the afternoon but I still don't think it was a 230 pitch.

"We need to keep working because if we don't we will keep not getting enough."

Didn’t expect so much turn at Trent Bridge

The left-handed batsman admitted that Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were very good one-day spin bowlers but said he didn’t expect the Trent Bridge pitch to spin as much as it did. He was of the opinion that England felt the dearth of a quality spinner during the match and didn’t bat well which made his team’s defeat inevitable.

"We are trying to find the quality spinners, India are blessed with a lot of quality. I didn't think Trent Bridge would spin as much as it did, but you have to adjust to that. The bottom line is we didn't play very well with the bat," Cook added.
