Middlesex Captain Adam Voges was rushed to the hospital, during a county game against Hampshire after being hit on the head by a throw yesterday. The ball was thrown towards the wickets by substitute fielder Ollie Rayner, but the wicket-keeper John Simpson completely misjudged the bounce. It went onto turn and hit Voges on the head, while he was looking the other way.
The 36-year old fell to the floor immediately, prompting physios of both teams rushing onto the ground. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, with the doctors declaring that he would take no further part in the match.
Middlesex Director of Cricket, Angus Fraser told Cricinfo, “The feeling from the physio Peter Waxman is that it is a concussion but that will be shown up later. It was a freak injury but you wonder why when a cricket ball which gets thrown around the field as much as it does it doesn't happen as often. A cricket ball is a hard thing.”
However, Voges has been released from the hospital, but is still complaining of severe headches. Fraser added, “It is sad for Adam and disappointing for us as we will have no more use out of him in this match. He wasn't feeling very well in the dressing room so we decided to get him to the hospital to get him checked over. He wants to remain here even if he can't play.”
Opener Michael Carberry looked in fine form as he helped Hampshire reach a formidable target of 315. He was given good support by Liam Dawson, who scored 87.
There were major concerns within the Middlesex camp as the injury looked very severe. However, doctors have confirmed Voges is now out of danger, but might miss the next match as well.
