Kolkata, April 17 (IANS) Former Indian cricket chief Jagmohan Dalmiya Thursday expressed happiness at the decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to convene an emergent working committee meeting Sunday.

The meeting, at 3 p.m. in Mumbai, will discuss issues pertaining to the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing and betting scam which is now before the Supreme Court. Dalmiya welcomed the move saying it was important to ensure the image of the BCCI – which has taken a beating – is restored.

“I am happy that better sense has prevailed and an emergent meeting of the working committee has been convened by the BCCI. There are some issues of serious nature that need to be discussed at the earliest,” said Dalmiya.

“After all, it cannot be denied that the image of the BCCI has taken a beating of late. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to ensure that the BCCI’s image is restored in the eyes of the cricket loving public of India.”

The apex court said Wednesday that suspended board chief N. Srinivasan’s features in the list of the 13 people named by Mudgal Committee in the betting scam and he cannot take charge if the board has to conduct an inquiry on its own in the scandal that rocked Indian cricket last year.

Though the Supreme Court admitted that all the charges are yet to be verified, it said that if the BCCI is given powers to investigate then it has to be done without Srinivasan at the top.
