BCCI yet to implement the recommended points system for Ranji Trophy matches

The Ranji Trophy might be revamped, but not the format

ESPNCricinfo reported that the BCCI have not yet debated the merits of the proposed changes to the points system for Ranji Trophy. The BCCI’s working committee was scheduled to meet on August 28. But, the meeting was adjourned without any breakthroughs due to the presence of the controversial former Board President N Srinivasan who attended in his capacity as TNCA President.

Previously in May, a panel chaired by former India captain Anil Kumble had mentioned several changes to the existing points structure for all Ranji Trophy matches which include removing points given for first-innings lead and the addition of bonus points to the teams which reach a prescribed target in both batting and bowling. This would have influenced domestic captains to shift their focus from gaining a first-innings lead and instead, pursue outright victories.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of India had disbarred the Tamil Nadu strongman from holding any administrative position within BCCI. As a result, his appearance evoked strong protests from several board members who cited legal issues which meant that the meeting was cancelled.

Consequently, the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy tournament, which begins tomorrow, will continue to employ the traditional points system. This will appease a section of the board members who had reservations about the proposed system by arguing that there could be a distinct possibility of both teams not being awarded any points at the conclusion of a 4-day match. Hence, the meeting was arranged with the idea of deliberating about the advantages of the system which is usually followed in both County and Shield cricket.

A number of cricketers including former stalwarts to current veterans have advocated their support for deviating away from the usual points pattern. But, with the BCCI getting itself entangled in a legal mess, they have not even found the time to consider a conversation on this matter.

Usually, the BCCI top brass who are awash with both money and resources convene emergency meetings at the wake of pressing administrative issues. They have disclosed their intent which seems to be restricted to enrolling famous lawyers and navigating through sticky waters.

At a time when the men who matter are scampering to appoint the demised Jagmohan Dalmiya’s successor, the irony is lost on the much maligned BCCI whose existential purpose is based upon running the sport in India. Even though the BCCI constitution provides a clause for organizing special meetings in case of pressing issues, there seems to be no indication that the clause might be invoked any time soon to discuss the implementation of the new points system.
