Big Bash League: Melbourne Stars sign Kevin Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen will be playing in the BBL this season

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has signed a two-year contract with Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Melbourne Stars. Having been controversially discarded from the England set-up in February, Pietersen has decided to become a T20 freelancer of sorts, playing predominantly only in T20 cricket across the world.

He captained the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year and has also signed up for a franchise in the Caribbean Premier League.

Pietersen excited

Speaking of his decision to join the Melbourne-based franchise, Pietersen said: “I’m very excited about joining the Melbourne Stars and look forward to playing with some of Australia’s best T20 cricketers.”

“Joining the Melbourne Stars was an easy choice for me when you look at the players we have and the amazing off-field support staff, and don’t forget our home ground, the MCG,” he added.

Melbourne Stars coach Greg Shipperd pleased

Pietersen has built a notorious reputation of falling out badly with the teams that he plays for, but Greg Shipperd, Stars coach, has no qualms about signing the belligerent batsman.

“We are delighted to have Kevin as a Melbourne Star,” Shipperd said.

“He’s a proven competitor and I am confident that he will revel in the fiercely competitive atmosphere of the BBL.”

Damien Fleming, who was recently appointed the Stars’ Chairman of Selectors, approved Pietersen’s acquisition and hoped that the 34-year old’s vast experience can benefit the franchise in acquiring silverware. Stars have been the perennial bridesmaids in the BBL, having come close to winning the title on a few occasions but never managing to go the full distance.

“KP’s an awesome talent and a proven world-class cricketer across all forms of the game,” Fleming said. “Someone of his experience will be of great benefit to our club as we strive to go one step further in BBL 04.”

Pietersen needed after losing Hogg and Wade

Stars recently lost the services of Brad Hodge and Matthew Wade, two hugely influential members of the squad, and CEO Clint Cooper feels that Pietersen’s signing is just the boost the club needed, both on and off the field.

“Being able to finally secure Kevin is massive for our club, especially for our members, given some recent post-season defections,” Cooper said.

“We have no doubt that Kevin will be a huge hit on and off the field, right across Australia this summer and can’t wait to see him take on the BBL’s best.

“Personally, I cannot wait to see Kevin walk out to a packed MCG to cheers of our members and fans.”
