Stats: Indian cricketers scoring a century and a duck in the same Test match

Cheteshwar Pujara
Pujara scored 145* & 0 in the third Test against Sri Lanka

Cheteshwar Pujara scored an unbeaten 145 in the first inning of the Third test against Sri Lanka at Colombo (SSC) carrying hit bat through the innings after coming in as a make-shift opener. However, he was out for a second-ball duck in the second innings.

It was the 18th occasion of an Indian batsman scoring a duck and a century in the same Test match. The first Indian to achieve this rare feat was Vinoo Mankad (111 and 0) against Australia at Melbourne in 1947/48 series. The last before Pujara to do so was Shikhar Dhawan (0 and 115) against New Zealand at Auckland in 2013/14 series.

Pujara did it as an opener; it is the 10th instance by an Indian opener in Tests and he is the only Indian to carry his bat in the first innings and then get out for duck in the second innings.

Virender Sehwag, the only Indian opener to do it more than once, is also the last Indian to score a century in the first innings and a duck in the second innings. This also happened in Sri Lanka – Virender Sehwag (109 and 0) at Colombo PSS in 2010.

Only Pankaj Roy (140 and 0) at Mumbai (Brabourne stadium), Vijay Manjrekar (108 and 0) at Chennai, Nayan Mongia (152 and 0) at Delhi and Rahul Dravid (136 and 0) at Mohali did it in India while the other seven were outside India – 2 in Sri Lanka, 2 in England, 2 in West Indies and 1 in Australia.

Only Gundappa Viswanath (0 and 137) at Kanpur and Sachin Tendulkar (0 and 136) at Chennai were in India. Other five were outside India – One each in West Indies, Australia, England, Pakistan and New Zealand.

Gundappa Viswanath achieved this on his Test debu, the first & only Indian to do so. Among international cricketers, Andrew Hudson (South Africa) and Mohammad Wasim (Pakistan) had such a debut in 1992 and 1996 respectively.

Only two Indians have scored a 150+ and a duck in the same Test – Madhav Apte (0 and 163*) against West Indies at Port of Spain in 1952/53 and Nayan Mongia (152 and 0) against Australia at Delhi in 1996/97. Pujara missed out on this club by five runs.

Madhav Apte (0 and 163*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (145* and 0) are the only Indians to score an unbeaten century in one innings and a duck in the other.
