Cheteshwar Pujara remains India’s top ranked batsman in Test cricket

In the latest ICC Test rankings, Cheteshwar Pujara remains the highest ranked Indian batsman after retaining his position at No. 6, followed by Virat Kohli at No. 20, who also hasn’t made a move in his ranking.

Pujara scored a century at Wankhede against West Indies in Sachin Tendulkar‘s last Test match, and currently averages 65.50 after 15 matches in Test cricket. Virat Kohli’s highest score in the series which India won 2-0, was 57. However, he remains static at No. 20 in the rankings.

AB de Villiers is also static at the top of the rankings for batsmen in Tests, followed by his teammate Hashim Amla. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who played his 150th Test in the recent series against India, is at the third pedestal.

England captain Alastair Cook is back in top 10 after moving one position up in rankings to No. 10. David Warner gained the most, jumping 18 places to be ranked in top 20 for the first time in his career, at No. 17. Warner’s 124 in the first Ashes Test at Brisbane helped him make this jump.

In Test bowling, South Africa’s Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander continue to occupy the top two positions respectively. India’s first entry comes at No. 5, where Ravichandran Ashwin remains unmoved. Same is the case with Pragyan Ojha, who at No. 9, hasn’t moved in the rankings.

Mitchell Johnson’s 9-wicket haul in the first Ashes Test at Brisbane earned him a recall in the top 20 and he’s jumped four places to be ranked No. 19 in the latest rankings. Another bowler who gained from the Brisbane Test was England’s Stuart Broad, who moved up four places to be ranked No. 7.

However, Zaheer Khan, who made a comeback to India’s Test squad today, is now ranked No. 20, two pedestals lower than his previous ranking.
