Video: Shreevats Goswami gets run out in one of the most bizarre ways

Vinay Kumar has been in excellent form for Karnataka in the last couple of Ranji seasons

In one of the most bizarre incidents, Bengal batsman Shreevats Goswami was run-out by Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar. This happened at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore today, which is Day 1 of the second round of Ranji matches.

Defending champions Karnataka failed to defeat Assam in their first Ranji match, with the match ending in a draw. Assam picked up three points while Karnataka could only pick up one point. After a disappointing showing, Karnataka was hoping to get a good start to the game after winning the toss and electing to field.

Karnataka picked up two quick wickets of the Bengal openers – Naved Ahmed and Abhishek Das – with Vinay Kumar, Karnataka’s inspirational captain, taking both the wickets. Reeling at 15 for 2, Bengal batsmen Shreevats Goswami and Sudip Chatterjee tried to bring stability to their innings before Vinay Kumar delivered another blow.

In the seventh over, when Bengal were 26 for 2, Goswami defended the ball back to Kumar, the bowler. Goswami just got back into the crease but was just a bit too slow off his mark. This gave the bowler enough time to pick up the ball and have a shy at the stumps.

Kumar’s throw was way off target, but the ball hit Goswami’s bat which was already in the crease. This impact caused the bat to be raised and the ball bizarrely deflects towards the stumps, knocking the bails off the stumps before Goswami could put his bat back in the crease. The umpire ruled Goswami out leaving Bengal at 26/3.

This dismissal joins the group of weird dismissals that has happened in cricket, with Ben Stokes recently being given out for obstructing the field.
