Australia vs South Africa: Epic banter on Twitter is epic!

The battle for the Test mace has shifted to Twitter

The word is ‘burn’. B-U-R-N.

If your stay on internet is a fairly recent one, you’ll require the definition, provided by the ever-reliable Urban Dictionary, for the aforementioned term.

Burn (slang): to disrespect someone (to diss); to make fun of someone; used by a third party after a first party makes fun of a second party.

Australia and South Africa have been some of the fiercest competitors on the field of cricket, and their rivalry has produced some gems over the years.

But not all battles are fought on the ground these days, and advent of social media has brought the fight to other channels like Twitter and Facebook. Where BCCI remains a staunch believer in no-humour and straight to-the-point reporting on their Twitter handle, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa have taken a much lighter approach.

Recently, when South Africa won the 2-Test series in Sri Lanka, they displaced Australia from the top of the ICC Test rankings. Cricket Australia’s reaction on Twitter though, deserved a round of applause:

Australia face Pakistan in UAE later this year and if they can secure a series win, they’ll win back the top position from the Proteas.

The banter

Having got the Test mace, CSA took a dig at the Aussies on Twitter, claiming the mace was back to its ‘rightful’ owner.

Not one to hold back, the reply from Aussies brings the term explained at the start of this article into play. Classy stuff, mate!

As the saying goes, Cricket South Africa, please apply cold water to the burned area!
