5 memorable moments from the West Indies-Afghanistan match that don't fade away

Afganistan had played some very spirited cricket prior to their match against West Indies, but had failed to cross the line despite their exploits. However, on Sunday, the Afghans finally managed to cross the line, defeating the West Indies by 6 runs in Nagpur round-off their tournament on a note.

One can certainly say that memories of the West Indies – Afghanistan match will not fade away, quite like the Axe Signature line of body perfumes.

Here are 5 memorable moments from the match:

1. Ramdin’s almost brilliant catch

There was drama as early as the second ball of the Afghanistan innings when Usman Ghani tried to flick a leg-side delivery from Andre Russell, only to be caught down the leg side by Denesh Ramdin.

The umpires gave it out after everybody went up in appeal. However, the keeper indicated that he wasn't sure whether he had taken it cleanly and so the umpires decided to go upstairs. Replays indicated that as he landed down after taking the catch, the ball had hit the turf and as a result, umpire Bruce Oxenford had to overturn his decision.

2. Sammy’s blinder at slip

The group leaders were strolling against the 'minnows' after the first 10 overs. In the second delivery of the 11th over, Darren Sammy inflicted further misery on Afghanistan.

Off the bowling of Suliemann Benn, Sammy dived low and took a blinder of a catch to get rid of the dangerous Samiullah Shenwari. The ball turned a hint after pitching and the Windies skipper was quick to turn to his right and plucked out an excellent catch to put his team in command.

3. Sammy, Samuels combine to pick a beauty

Sammy was involved in yet another catch, but, this time, it formed only a smaller part in the dismissal. Off the 2nd ball of the 17th over, Mohammad Nabi slapped a full toss delivery from Russel towards mid-off, where the Windies captain was standing.

He stretched his right hand out and got a fingertip to it, but failed to catch hold of the ball. However, Marlon Samuels was standing right behind him and he caught the ball to finish the catch and send the batsman back to the pavilion.

4. Lewis’s forgettable debut

Replacing a giant like Chris Gayle, who is possibly the most destructive batsman in world cricket currently, is no mean feat. West Indies roped in Evin Lewis to replace the flamboyant opener. However, in his debut for the West Indies, Lewis failed to shine.

He would have hoped to get his international career off to a good start, but it wasn't to be as he was dismissed for a 7-ball duck. After struggling for 6 balls, his misery was ended when he was caught by Rashid Khan off Amir Hamza.

5. Zadran’s stunner

With just 10 runs needed off the final over and with 3 wickets in hand, it looked as though it was the West Indies were on their way to their 4th consecutive win. However, in the third delivery of the last over, Mohammad Nabi dished out a full toss to Carlos Brathwaite.

The fate of the match could be sealed with a six as Brathwaite heaved the ball towards long on. However, Najibullah Zadran ran from the mid-wicket boundary to pluck out a sensational catch to give hope to his side. Afghanistan went on to win by 6 runs to become the only team to defeat the West Indies so far in the tournament.
