From IPL to Wheat Farms : The Curious Case of Kamran Khan

Ardent IPL followers will remember Kamran Khan, the bowler who was hailed as the ‘next big thing’ by none other than the then Rajasthan Royals skipper Shane Warne. He grabbed the spotlight in 2009, when he began playing for the Royals without any prior first class experience.

During his time at Rajasthan, he was a regular member of the starting XI. He bowled quick and was very effective in the death overs. Though, his bowling action came under much speculation yet he managed to overcome that and perform well . After two seasons with the Royals, Kamran was recruited by the Pune Warriors last season. He played only one game and now has been cut off from the team.

From being the local hero of his Nadwa Sarai village in Uttra Pradesh, the 21 year old has now become a target in his home town. “It’s almost like they were waiting for me to fall” says Kamran who is visible upset with the way that his people are treating him. He added that everyone in his town is teasing and taunting him by saying how his career got over so quickly.

To keep his mind off all these things, Kamran works on his brother’s wheat farms in seclusion. “I spend my days training for a comeback in the mornings and evenings. During the day, I work on my brother’s farm, keeping to myself, away from the rest of the villagers,” says Kamran who can constantly bowl deliveries at 140 km/h.

Obviously, when he gets time after his farming and practice, he switches on the TV set and watches his team Pune Warriors play with his jersey on.

Kamran Khan’s story is begging to become a fairytale with a happy ending. Let us hope Kamran finds back his form and makes a comeback. After all, he deserves it more than anyone.
