Google celebrate John Wisden’s 187th birthday

Google celebrated John Wisden’s birthday today by dedicating the Google doodle to the ‘Little Wonder’, the man who gave cricket its ‘bible.’

Wisden was born on 5th September 1826, in Brighton, Sussex.

Standing at just 5 feet 6 inches, Wisden played 187 first class matches between 1845 and 1863, taking 1109 wickets at an average of 10.32. He scored 4140 runs at an average of 14.12 (which was actually a good average at the time!).

His most notable contribution, however, was his creation of Wisden’s Cricketers’ Almanack in 1864. Google celebrated his 187th birthday with an image of Victorian gentlemen playing cricket.

Wisden died on 5th April 1884 of cancer in Westminster, London at the age of 57.
