ICC World T20 2016: 10 records that were broken at the World T20

Tillakaratne Dilshan Sri Lanka cricket 2016 World T20

Before the start of the 2016 ICC World T20, there were a lot of expectations of it becoming the biggest ever edition of the tournament with winners of the first edition, India hosting it. By the end of the tournament, fans will have witnessed some of the most thrilling matches in the T20 format with many records being set and broken.

West Indies, who were not everyone's favourites at the start of the tournament, ended up as the winners of the 2016 edition as they defeated England in the most dramatic fashion in Sunday's final in front of a packed Eden Gardens.

We take a look at ten of the best records that were broken at the 2016 ICC World T20:

#10 – Most number of World T20 matches

Since the start of the ICC World T20 in 2007, there have been just a few players who have featured in all the editions. Indian captain, MS Dhoni is the Indian with the highest number of appearances in the World T20 with 33 matches under his belt. However, with just two games more, Sri Lankan veteran opener, Tillakaratne Dilshan is the one who has the record for the most number of appearances in World T20 history.

Dilshan has played 35 World T20 matches and scored 897 runs at an average of 30.93. After a disappointing showing by the 2014 champions, this could have been the last World T20 we watched the 39-year-old Dilshan play. Pakistan's Shahid Afridi is second in the list with 34 matches with Dhoni third on the list.

#9 – Most runs scored off the 20th over to win a T20I

Carlos Brathwaite West Indies England World T20 2016

When West Indian all-rounder, Carlos Brathwaite had to face English all-rounder, Ben Stokes in the last over of the World T20 final, no one expected Brathwaite, a relative newcomer, to score 19 runs off 6 balls. The most people might have expected is that Brathwaite would give strike to the experienced Samuels at the other end.

However, what ensued was history being made as Brathwaite hit Stokes for not just 19 runs, but for 24 runs – hitting four sixes off the first four balls of the over. This was the most expensive last over in a winning cause, with the previous best being 23 runs scored by Australia against Pakistan in 2010.

#8 – Most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in World T20s

MS Dhoni ICC World T20 2016

Indian limited-overs captain, MS Dhoni makes the list as he broke the record for having the most number of dismissals in World T20s. Dhoni now has 32 dismissals in 32 innings, averaging a dismissal per game. The Indian skipper overtook Pakistan's Kamran Akmal who previously held the record with 30 dismissals.

Dhoni has 21 catches and 11 stumpings to his name. In the five innings that he featured in the 2016 edition, Dhoni had 8 dismissals, with 4 catches and 4 stumpings each. Dhonis's work behind the stumps is second to none as his cat-like reflexes suggest he could easily carry on for a few more years and maybe even feature in the next edition.

#7 – Most wickets in World T20s

Shahid Afridi Pakistan ICC World T20 2016

Lasith Malinga's absence in the World T20 was a huge loss for Sri Lanka as the defending champions had a horrible tournament. The former Sri Lankan T20I skipper missing out on the whole tournament also meant that Shahid Afridi could overtake Malinga as the tournament's highest wicket-taker.

Afridi, who picked up 4 wickets in 4 innings in the World T20, took his total wickets tally to 39 wickets, going one above Malinga. The former Pakistan captain took 39 wickets in 34 innings at an average of 23.25. Afridi also holds the records for most number of wickets in T20Is, with 98 to his name.

#6 – Highest batting average in World T20s

Virat Kohli India World T20 2016

Player-of-the-tournament, Virat Kohli was easily the best batsman of the tournament with a number of match-winning knocks for India to take them to the semi-finals of the tournament. Kohli scored a phenomenal 273 runs in 5 innings at an outstanding average of 136.50 and a strike rate of 146.77.

His unbelievable batting average took his overall batting average in World T20s to a staggering 86.33 having scored 777 runs in just 16 innings. The second batsman on the list is Australia's Michael Hussey who was 30 runs behind Kohli with an average of 54.62 after he scored 437 runs in 16 innings. What makes Kohli's achievement greater is his knack of chasing down targets perfectly. While batting second in World T20s, Kohli averages 228.50 having scored 457 runs in 8 innings.

#5 – Highest World T20 run chase

England South Africa World T20 2016

In the 18th match of the World T20, when South Africa made the second highest total in the tournament's history by scoring 229/4 in 20 overs, it seemed like the result was a foregone conclusion. Brilliant fifties from Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, and JP Duminy propelled the Proteas to a very demanding score on what was a batting paradise.

However, the England openers set their team on the right track, giving them a perfect start to what seemed an impossible chase. Despite losing a few quick wickets, England's innings was steered by the brilliant Joe Root who scored 83 off 44 balls to guide his team to the best ever chase in World T20 history. This was also the second highest total that was chased down in T20I history.

#4 – Most sixes in a World T20 match

Chris Gayle England West Indies World T20 2016

World T20 champions, West Indies also played their first match of the tournament against fellow finalists, England at the batting paradise that is the Wankhede Stadium. England put on a challenging total of 182 in 20 overs after useful knocks from Joe Root and Jos Buttler.

Chris Gayle showed exactly why he considered the best in the format as he scored a brilliant unbeaten 100 off 48 balls. This was his second hundred in the World T20, thus equalling Brendon McCullum's record. Gayle smashed 5 fours and 11 sixes during his blistering knock.

The number of sixes hit by Gayle was the highest ever hit by a batsman in a World T20 match. Funnily enough, Gayle broke his own record of having hit 10 sixes in a 2007 ICC World T20 match against South Africa, the very innings he scored his first World T20 hundred.

#3 – Most fifties in T20Is

Virat Kohli India World T20 2016

Virat Kohli makes the list once again owing to his brilliant run with the bat at the World T20. Kohli played some sublime knocks, some of them ending up being crucial as they won India matches single-handedly.

Adding three fifties to his name during the tournament, Kohli took his tally of half-centuries to 16, thus becoming the player with the highest number of fifties in T20Is. Kohli overtook Chris Gayle, who has 13 fifties to his name. The Indian vice-captain also has the most number of 50-plus scores, with 16 while Gayle is one behind his Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate with 15.

#2 – Highest individual score in a World T20 Final

Marlon Samuels West Indies England World T20 2016

Although most cricket fans might remember only Carlos Brathwaite for the famous finish to the 2016 World T20 final, it was Marlon Samuels who was the architect of West Indies’ successful chase of the target set by England.

After losing the first three wickets cheaply, Samuels played a sensible knock for the Caribbeans taking the attack to the opposition when required and ensured that he remained until the very end to finish with 85* off 66 balls, hitting 9 fours and 2 sixes. This was the highest ever individual score in the finals of a World T20.

Samuels once again showed why he was considered as a big-match player as he broke his own record of 78 off 56 balls that he had scored in the 2012 World T20 final to guide his side to their first World T20 title.

#1 – Most T20I runs in a calendar year

Virat Kohli India World T20 2016

It might be surprising to find this stat in this list as it has been only 4 months since the calendar year began. However, that's all it took for Virat Kohli to become the player to have scored most runs in T20Is in a calendar year.

In 12 innings, Kohli has scored 625 runs at an average of 125.00 and a strike rate of 139.50. Kohli also has the highest number of fifties in a calendar year, with 7 already to his name. The 27-year-old overtook Martin Guptill's record of 472 runs scored in 13 innings in 2012.

Although there may not be more T20Is to follow this year, it will be difficult to break this record set by the Indian vice-captain. Sabbir Rahman is the second highest run-getter in 2016 with 463 runs scored in 16 innings. India's Rohit Sharma is third on the list with 425 runs in 16 innings.
