Atanu Dutta, an Indian citizen, has been arrested by the Bangladesh police for suspected betting activities during the recently concluded ICC World T20 tournament.

According to ESPNCricinfo, Enamul Haque, a sub-inspector in Mirpur, filed a case against Dutta under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code (a law which allows police to arrest without a warrant) following which the arrest was made.

This is the third time in less than a month that Dutta has been arrested for suspected betting. He has been travelling to Bangladesh frequently over the last 3 years with authorities claiming to have spotted him in the stadiums during the ODI World Cup in 2011 as well.

He is also believed to have been seen at the ground during Bangladesh’s recent tours to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka as well as the Asia Cup which was held in the country just prior to the World T20.

Dutta is suspected to have aided betting via phone calls to bookies in India and the UAE. He was interrogated by the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s security chief during the second edition of the BPL but was not arrested sue to lack of evidence.

The Bangladesh police are confident that they have nabbed him this time around as they had tapped his phone following a previous arrest and claim that they have solid proof of his connection with bookies in India and the UAE.
