Inzamam-ul-Haq left red-faced after Mohammad Shahzad snubs his high-five in Afghanistan dugout

Afghanistan’s star batsman Mohammad Shahzad and coach Inzamam-ul-Haq

Afghanistan’s Mohammad Shahzad blasted a 39-ball 61 to set the tone in a 14-run victory over Scotland in their opening match of the World T20 qualifiers, but that was not the only thing he did which made news in the social media – he was also involved in an embarrassing moment with Afghanistan’s coach Inzamam-ul-Haq.

As Shahzad walked back dismissed in the 13th over, everybody in the ground congratulated him on what seemed to be a matchwinning knock already – Afghanistan were cruising at 107/2, with seven overs still to bat.

Coach Inzamam, who is no stranger to being made to look foolish, thought he would go up to congratulate his star batsman, but was left red-faced at what happened.

Inzamam leaves his seat in the dugout and approaches Shahzad:

Inzamam raises his hand in an attempted high-five with Shahzad:

Shahzad ignores the high five and walks past Inzamam:

Inzamam starts to lower his hand, realising he has been rebuffed:

Inzamam directs his attention towards the match, pretending that is what he had walked out to do all along:

The embarrassing moment is brought to a close – Inzamam is engrossed in the game and Shahzad receives congratulations from his other teammates:

Why Shahzad did not respond to his coach is a speculative question with many possible answers – perhaps he was simply too tired after the knock to raise his arm. Given the differences in height of the two men, returning Inzamam’s high-five may quite possibly have seemed too big an ask for the batsman.

Shapoor Zadran, who was one of the bystanders who were witness to the scene that had just happened, even went forward to warn Shahzad about what he had done, but then thought better of it as he saw Inzamam walking towards the boundary ropes as if nothing had happened.

While some commented that Inzamam’s habit of being run out by his partners continue even into his coaching days, some commented that Shahzad and Inzamam look too much like each other for them to be different persons.
