Gautam Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders to their second IPL title

Kolkata Knight Riders claimed their second IPL crown in three years as they beat Kings XI Punjab in a thrilling high-scoring encounter in the final of the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League. Glenn Maxwell was named the Player of the tournament, whilst Manish Pandey walked away with the Man-of-the-Match award for his 50-ball 94 in the final.

Here is a look at IPL 2014 in numbers.

OVERALL

• It was the second time that KKR managed to claim the IPL crown, in three years, having chased down 190+ scores on both occasions.
• Kings XI made their first final appearance in the IPL.
• Although Kings XI managed the most wins in this edition with 12, they lost out to KKR in the all-important final.
• CSK continued their record of being the only team to appear in the play-offs in every edition of the IPL
• There were a total of 2276 boundaries hit in the tournament.
• A total of 1562 fours and 714 sixes were hit in this year’s IPL.
• The 200-run mark was crossed 9 times in the tournament, and the Kings XI managed that feat four times: more than any other team in the tournament.
• The highest team total was the 231 Kings XI scored against CSK at Cuttack on 7 May 2014.
• The highest successful run chase in the tournament once again went to Kings XI, who chased down a total of 205 twice, once against CSK and then against Sunrisers Hyderabad, both in the 19th over
• A total of 428 runs were scored in the qualifier between Kings XI and CSK, the most in this year’s tournament.
• CSK’s 93-run defeat of Delhi Daredevils at Abu Dhabi on 21 April 2014 was the biggest margin of victory.

BATTING

• With 660 runs, Robin Uthappa finished as the leading run scorer in this year’s tournament and claimed the Orange Cap.
• Virender Sehwag’s 122(58) against CSK in the qualifier was the highest score by any player this year.
• V Sehwag, Wriddhiman Saha and L Simmons were the only three players to score a century in this year’s edition. However, a further six batsman scored 90 or more, without converting it into a ton.
• David Warner (SRH) finished with the most fifties (6) in the tournament.
• MS Dhoni scored 371 runs at an average of 73.20 to top the list of best averages (min 10 innings played).
• Scoring at a phenomenal 192.55, James Faulkner had the deadliest strike-rate of any batsman who faced at least 90 balls.
• Suresh Raina’s strike-rate of 348 in his knock of 87 against Kings XI was the highest strike rate in an innings in the history of IPL (min 50 runs).
• Robin Uthappa finished with the most boundaries as he managed 92 in his 16 innings.
• Glenn Maxwell hit the most sixes (36), whilst Uthappa hit the most fours (74) in the tournament.
• MS Dhoni reaffirmed his status as one of the best finishers as he finished with most not-outs in the tournament (10).
• Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir were stuck with the dubious record of finishing with the most ducks in the tournament (3).
• Glenn Maxwell and David Miller’s third-wicket stand of 135 runs against CSK was the highest partnership in IPL 2014.
• There were 20 100-run partnerships in the tournament, with the opening pairing proving to be the most productive with 7 century stands.

BOWLING

• Mohit Sharma (CSK) finished at the top of the wicket-taking charts with 23 scalps in his 16 innings, thereby walking away with his maiden Purple Cap.
• Ravindra Jadeja’s figures of 12/4 against KKR was the best bowling figures of the tournament.
• Kings XI’s Karaveer Singh finished with the best average (14.90) of any bowler in the tournament (min 150 runs conceded).
• Sandeep Sharma’s strike rate of 13.3 was the best of any bowler in the tournament (min 25 overs).
• Akshar Patel was the most economical bowler with an economy rate of just 6.13 (min 25 overs).
• Ishwar Pandey (CSK), Sandeep Sharma and Akshar Patel finished with most maiden overs (2) in the tournament.
• Akshar Patel and Sunil Narine finished joint-top with the most dot balls (157) in this year’s edition.
• 10 bowlers managed to take four wickets in an innings in the tournament, but only Ravindra Jadeja and Sunil Narine managed that feat twice.
• At 152.44, Dale Steyn bowled the fastest ball of the tournament.

FIELDING

• Parthiv Patel and Wriddhiman Saha effected 12 dismissals each to stay joint-top in the list of most dismissals by any keeper in this tournament.
• David Miller finished with the most catches for any player, with 14.
• Parthiv Patel and Wriddhiman Saha were the only keepers to have had 3 dismissals in a single innings.
• Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Glenn Maxwell and David Miller hold the record for most catches in an innings (3).
