Axar Patel’s hat trick toppled Gujarat Lions

We had two matches on 1 May 2016. Gujarat Lions played Kings XI Punjab in the first game. Both have very contrasting seasons and both wanted a win for different reasons. Gujarat Lions lead the table while Kings XI Punjab is at the bottom. Rising Pune Supergiants played Mumbai Indians in the second game. Both teams wanted a win to springboard themselves upward and contest for the top half of the table.

Match one – Kings XI Punjab vs Gujarat Lions:

Gujarat Lions won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Kings XI Punjab Playing XI:

Murali Vijay (C), Shaun Marsh, Wriddhiman Saha (WK), David Miller, Glenn Maxwell, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, KC Cariappa, Sandeep Sharma, Mohit Sharma.

Gujarat Lions Playing XI:

Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Suresh Raina (C), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Ishan Kishan, Dwayne Bravo, James Faulkner, Praveen Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Shivil Kaushik.

Kings XI Punjab played under a new captain – Murali Vijay. Moreover, KXIP dropped Manan Vohra.

Trivia: Nine players have captained Kings XI Punjab so far.

Marus Stonis and Murali Vijay started well and scored 59 runs in the powerplay. However, they lost four wickets in the following three overs. Murali Vijay stood his ground and scored a much-needed half-century.

Shivil Kaushik had a great game. He picked up three wickets. Dwayne Bravo and Praveen Kumar took two wickets each. Gujarat Lions restricted Kings XI Punjab to 154 runs.

Mohit Sharma struck early and removed Brendon McCullum in the second over. He took three wickets today. Axar Patel had an excellent game and picked up four wickets.

Kings XI Punjab was great with the ball today and beat Gujarat Lions comfortably.

Match two –Rising Pune Supergiants vs Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to field first.

Rising Pune Supergiants Playing XI:

Ajinkya Rahane, Saurabh Tiwary, Steven Smith, MS Dhoni(WK & C), Thisara Perera, Rajat Bhatia, Peter Handscomb, Ravichandran Ashwin, Scott Boland, Murugan Ashwin, Ashok Dinda.

Mumbai Indians Playing XI:

Rohit Sharma(C), Parthiv Patel(WK), Ambati Rayudu, Jos Buttler, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Harbhajan Singh, Tim Southee, Mitchell McClenaghan, Jasprit Bumrah.

More injury woes for Pune – Mitchell Marsh is ruled out of IPL 2016.

McClenaghan removed man-in-form Ajinkya Rahane in his first over. Steve Smith came and scored a brilliant 45 of 23 balls before Bumrah dismissed him. Tiwary scored a well-timed fifty.

Mumbai Indians pulled it back in the latter half of the innings and restricted Rising Pune Supergiants to 159/5.

Rising Pune Supergiants dismissed Parthiv Patel early. It didn’t make a difference, though. Rohit Sharma started brilliantly and scored a magnificent half-century. Jos Buttler and Rohit Sharma guided Mumbai Indians to a comfortable victory.

Leading run-scorers:

David Warner leads the highest run-scorers chart with 386 runs. He even has the most number of sixes in the tournament. Suresh Raina moved to the tenth place in the leading run-scorers chart. Rohit Sharma fired himself to the second spot.

We have seen some top-class fielding in IPL 9. Great fielding will often win you matches. AB de Villiers has the most catches in the tournament so far. He took nine catches in six matches. MI’s Parthiv Patel has the most number of dismissals as a wicketkeeper.
