Sunrisers Hyderabad featuring on the second spot on the points table took on Rising Pune Supergiants in the 40th match of the IPL on May 10th. Last time these two teams met in Hyderabad, Supergiants dominated the Sunrisers and won the match by 34 runs (D/L method).

Since that day, Sunrisers had won 3 games on the trot. They have now made it 4 in 4 and go back to the top whereas Supergiants are now officially out of the contention for a top four spot.

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and elected to bat first

Playing XIs:

Sunrisers Hyderabad:

David Warner(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Kane Williamson, Yuvraj Singh, Moises Henriques, Deepak Hooda, Naman Ojha(w), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Barinder Sran, Ashish Nehra, Mustafizur Rahman

Rising Pune Supergiants:

Ajinkya Rahane, Usman Khawaja, Saurabh Tiwary, MS Dhoni(c/wk), Thisara Perera, George Bailey, Rajat Bhatia, Ravichandran Ashwin, Adam Zampa, Ashok Dinda, RP Singh

RP Singh sends back the dangerous Warner early

Warner gave an early signal of being on the attack when he hit RP Singh over the covers for a six. But in the next over RP made a stunning comeback to get him out caught behind for just 11. Some tidy bowling from Dinda and RP kept the run rate under check.

It was only in the last over of the powerplay that Dhawan struck a four and a six to take the team’s score to 34/1.

Ashwin’s superb bowling spell kept the batsmen quiet

Shikhar Dhawan started batting freely and reached 33 in quick time. But Ashwin struck with a much-anticipated spell from him and got Dhawan caught at long on. He bowled 4 overs on the trot and finished his spell with a wicket for just 16 runs.

SRH were 70/2 after 13 overs. Kane Williamson had batted steadily till then and needed to up the ante. Joined by Yuvraj, both looked to get the team to a competitive total.

Zampa’s six-for restricts SRH to 137

Adam Zampa created history as he registered the second best bowling spell in the IPL ever. He ended up with the figures of 4-0-19-6. He picked up 3 wickets in the final over itself. The SRH innings never got going.

Yuvraj looked good at one stage but Zampa removed him for 23. Deepak Hooda hit a couple of sixes at the end yet they could get to a mediocre total of 137. The game was far from over at that stage. The kind of bowling form SRH were in, it wasn’t going to be easy to chase the total down for RPS.

RPSG off to a terrible start

Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a beautiful outswinger to dismiss Ajinkya Rahane for a duck. It was a body blow for RPS as their premier batsman was dismissed without troubling the scorers. Then Deepak Hooda showed a glimpse of brilliance in the field as he ran Usman Khawaja out for 11.

Surprisingly Ravichandran Ashwin walked in to bat at number 4. Some immaculate swing bowling kept RPS down to 25/2 at the end of the powerplay.

Ashwin and Bailey built a slow partnership

Perhaps Ashwin was sent in to play the role of a pinch hitter but he was nowhere near that. Maybe, he wanted to bat to make up to the poor bowling form in the tournament. Bailey and Ashwin added 49 runs for the 4th wicket before Henriques accounted for his wicket. Saurabh Tiwary then joined Ashwin at the crease.

Soon the ‘batsman Ashwin’ was caught down the leg side for his highest IPL score of 29. The run making was difficult as the equation became tougher for RPS.

SRH survive Dhoni’s scare to clinch a thriller

It again looked like one of those matches where Dhoni would win the game off the last ball, but that wasn’t to be this night. The situation was tailor-made for him. 14 runs were required off the last over. However, with Thisara Perera departing in the middle of the last over, Dhoni hit one over long for six.

With 5 needed off the last 2 balls, Yuvraj ran Dhoni out. Naman Ojha then pulled off a blinder of a catch to save a certain boundary. What a game it turned out to be. Nehra held his nerve and defended against the best finisher in the world. And with this win, Sunrisers displace Gujarat Lions to move to the top of the points table.

Match Result:

SRH 137/8 (20 overs) Dhawan 33, Zampa 6/19, Ashwin 1/16

RPS 133/8 (20 overs) Bailey 34, Nehra 3/29, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1/20

Sunrisers Hyderabad won by 4 runs

Man of the Match: Adam Zampa
