Mumbai Indians are the defending champions and have won the IPL twice, on the other hand, Delhi Daredevils whom they faced at the Feroze Shah Kotla have fared the worst in the IPL, finishing in the bottom half most times.
On a hot and sunny afternoon at Delhi, Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. Sharma said that he chose to bowl first because the pitch looked dry and would play better in the second innings, under the lights.
Mumbai fielded the same squad as the one that won against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Delhi, on the other hand, made one change bringing in Imran Tahir for Carlos Brathwaite.
Delhi loses talisman de Kock early
Delhi would have looked to de Kock to give them a start and set the tone for the innings, but he went early for just 9 at the end of the second over. Youngsters Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer played a few good shots, including a brilliant straight drive off Mitch McClenaghan which raced off to the boundary.
They looked set to score a big partnership, but Iyer who went for a big one off Hardik Pandya held out to Rayudu at cover. Karun Nair who came in next reverse swept Harbhajan four, but while going for the conventional sweep off the last ball was caught at the long leg.
Duminy and Samson stabilize innings
Sanju Samson scored a fifty and was ably partnered by JP Duminy who brought in his great amount of experience to stabilize the innings and help take DD go over a hundred. They also put up an 80 run partnership before Sanju Samson held out at long on for 60, with the score at 125. Duminy continued to take charge after the fall of Samson’s wicket.
Duminy scored a 50 of 31 deliveries to take Delhi to a fighting total of 154 from their 20 overs while Negi scored 10 off 10.
Mumbai Indians lose Parthiv Patel early again
Parthiv Patel once again failed to make an impact getting out early on in the innings for just 1. Once again Rohit and Rayudu scored a 50 run partnership, before being bowled by a beauty by Amit Mishra for 25.
Krunal Pandya played a blinder of an innings scoring 36 of just 17 deliveries and was run out while taking a suicidal run out by Zaheer Khan. Rohit once again played the anchor role for MI as he stuck into the Delhi bowling by batting at a strike rate of 129.54.
Jos Butler failed to score big runs as he fell for just 2 and Pollard who was the hero in the last game failed to do the same as he used up 18 balls to score just 19 runs.
The second last over was beautifully bowled by Zaheer Khan by not leaking too many runs and also taking Pollard’s wicket off the last delivery, which put pressure on Rohit and Hardik Pandya who came in next.
Morris was to bowl the last over and was hit for a six off the first delivery, but collided mid-pitch, with Pandya while taking a second run, resulting in a runout. This left MI 10 runs short of the total and handed DD their third consecutive victory.
SRH and KXIP play the 8pm fixture
The second match of the day sees the Sunrisers Hyderabad vs. the Kings XI Punjab. Hyderabad is currently in fifth place at the end of the DD and MI match. Punjab, on the other hand, is having an IPL to forget with just one win in four matches. David Warner won the toss and elected to bowl first.
