IPL T20: Highest and lowest team score, biggest run chase

Highest IPL Scorer: Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle's epic 175 led RCB to the highest ever score in IPL cricket

Eight years have passed since the beginning of the world's most popular domestic T20 tournament, the Indian Premier League. We have witnessed a number of highs and lows in the rich history of the IPL, both on and off the field. While off-field highs include the ever-growing popularity of the league and the exposure it has given to unknown names, the lows take into account the controversies and scandals which gave the IPL a bad name. On the other hand, the on-field highs and lows were related to either good or poor performances by both individuals as well as teams.

Over the years, we have seen some outstanding batting from different teams in the IPL which resulted in a number of high scores being made. There have been multiple scores of 200 and above in the 8-year history of the tournament. In fact, the very first IPL game that was played in 2008 saw the Kolkata Knight Riders score 222 for 3 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, courtesy of an epic 158 by Brendon McCullum. It was a performance which served as a curtain raiser for what one could go on to expect from the IPL and the rest, as they say, is history.

The highest ever team score in an IPL match is 263 for 5 achieved by the RCB side against the now defunct Pune Warriors in the 2013 IPL. The mercurial Chris Gayle led the way for RCB with an unbeaten 175, which is the top individual score not only in the IPL, but in any form of T20 cricket. A knock that went relatively unnoticed due to Gayle's stormy innings was an 8-ball 31 by another terrific batsman, AB de Villiers. The Challengers cruised to victory by 130 runs as the Warriors could manage just 133.

The presently suspended Chennai Super Kings team has produced the most scores of over 200 in the history of the tournament with 12 against their name. Their highest score is 246 for 5, which they got against the Rajasthan Royals in the 2010 IPL with Murali Vijay hitting 127 for them. Among the teams that have been part of the IPL since its inception, KKR have the least number of 200-plus scores with 3 in their kitty.

There have also been quite a few memorable run chases in 8 years of IPL cricket. The record for the highest run chase in the tournament lies with the Rajasthan Royals, who achieved this feat in the inaugural edition. Set a target of 215 to win by the now dysfunctional Deccan Chargers team, the Royals achieved a hard fought victory thanks to some last over heroics by their skipper Shane Warne. With 14 needed to win in the final 4 balls, Warne hammered Andrew Symonds for 16 off 3 to seal a win for his team with a ball to spare.

So far, we have only looked at the high points in terms of team batting performances in the IPL. However, it is time for us to shift focus towards some of the greatest lows that teams have hit during their journey in the tournament by getting a sub-par score on the board. The dubious distinction for the lowest score in IPL history is held by Rajasthan Royals, who were blown away for 58 against RCB in the 2009 season. The iconic Anil Kumble recorded figures of 5 for 5 as Bangalore won by 75 runs. The Delhi Daredevils have produced 7 scores of under 100, the most among all the IPL teams.
