Ishant Sharma has become the 9th highest wicket-taker for India in Test cricket. He reached the milestone in the first innings of the ongoing 2nd Test between New Zealand and India, which is also his 55th Test.

Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss at Wellington today and chose to field first, showing his faith in the pace bowlers on a seaming track.

Having wrecked the top order, Ishant dismissed BJ Watling to claim his 5th victim in the innings and 163rd victim of his career. And thus, Ishant eclipsed former Indian left-arm spinner Vinoo Mankad who accumulated 162 wickets in his Test career.

Ishant Sharma is also the 4th Indian seam bowler in the list after Kapil Dev(434), Zaheer Khan(306*) and Javagal Srinath(236). The next Indian ahead of Ishant in the list of leading wicket-takers for India is the former off-break bowler Erapalli Prasanna with 189 wickets.

Ishant Sharma picked up his career-best bowling figures today, ending up with 6/51 in from 17 overs.

Ishant has been dropped from the Asia Cup squad and T20 World Cup squad, but he is now showing his temperament in the longer format of the game.

India’s legendary leg spinner and former captain, Anil Kumble is in the top of the list of leading wicket-takers for India with 619 wickets.
