Kevin Pietersen: The hero, the villian, the outcast

Kevin Pietersen’s England career has been one of many highs and lows. From his magical century in the 2005 Ashes, to his texting incidents. He is a man who admittedly wasn’t easy to captain but none the less he is probably the most talented cricketer I have ever seen.

His effortless strokes and unrivalled confidence captured the imagination of fans across the globe. He will be greatly missed in the International game. Despite being not just England’s top-scorer in the recent 5-0 Ashes defeat but England’s all-time leading scorer across all the formats. The 33 year old has been told that he is no longer part of the national team’s plans.

The news has come with some shock, of course there was talk and small rumours but did anyone think it would actually happen? It has certainly caused uproar amongst the media and cricket fans. I am one of the fans, for me Kevin Pietersen was one of the main reasons why I really got into cricket. He was my first cricketing idol and as I wrote in an old blog article his 158 in the 2005 Ashes was one of my first cricket memories. For these reasons it is a real shame to see his career end this way.

I still can’t really comprehend the decision, I feel sorry for him especially after he was included in a provisional 30-man squad for the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh which starts in March. To finish off I would just like to say thank you to Kevin. (Kevin if you happen to read this – which I doubt but oh well), thanks for everything. I will never forgot watching you smash 100 at Hove for Surrey or meeting you after a match to get your autograph.
