Kumar Sangakkara becomes only the fourth player ever to go past 13000-run mark in ODIs

Playing his 386th One Day International (ODI) match, against England at Hambantota today, Kumar Sangakkara became only the fourth batsman ever – after Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and Sanath Jayasuriya – to go past the 13,000-run mark in this format of the game.

The 37-year-old made his ODI debut, against Pakistan at Galle, in the year 2000, and he has 19 centuries and 89 half-centuries to his name, so far.

Opting to bat first in a 35-over match (reduction in overs due to a rain delay), Sri Lanka were 3 down for 31 runs in 5.5 overs, before a 87-run partnership between Sangakkara and captain Angelo Mathews helped them recover.

Mathews was the first to go for a 45-ball 37 with the score at 118. Sangakkara (63 off 62) fell soon after completing his half-century – his 6th this year – in an attempt to up the scoring rate, caught by Moeen Ali at mid-on off the bowling of fast bowler Chris Jordan.

At the time of writing this article, Lanka were on 154/5 in 26 overs, with Lahiru Thirimanne (21 off 24) and Jeevan Mendis (1 off 1) at the crease. The home side have already taken a 2-0 lead in the series.
