Kumar Sangakkara scores ton in 2nd innings; creates more records

Kumar Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara followed up his 319-run knock in the first innings with a ton in the second innings too. Sangakkara broke a slew of records in the Test match, thanks to the flat deck and the hapless Bangladesh bowling attack.

Here are some of the records that the former Sri Lankan captain broke during the second Test match against Bangladesh at Chittagong.

1) Fourth player to score 400 runs in a Test: When he reached 81 in his second innings, Sangakkara became only the fourth player in the history of Test cricket and the first Sri Lankan to score 400 or more runs in a Test match. Graham Gooch, Mark Taylor and Brian Lara are the other three.

2) Third highest individual scorer in a Test match : Sangakkara went on to overtake Brian Lara’s score of 400 in a Test match with a four of Mahmudullah. With that, he became the third highest scorer in a Test match, only behind Graham Gooch and Mark Taylor.

3) Second player to score triple hundred and hundred in the same Test: When a six off Sohag Gazi took him to a hundred in his second innings, Sangakkara became only the second man to score a triple hundred and a hundred in the same Test. Graham Gooch had done it earlier against India at Lord’s in 1990.

4) Joint fourth-highest number of sixes in a match : Sangakkara hit 10 sixes in the match, which puts him joint fourth on the list for highest number of sixes in a match. Wasim Akram tops the list with 12, with Nathan Astle and Matthew Hayden at the 2nd and 3rd spots respectively.

5) Third-most runs in boundaries in a match: Behind Graham Gooch’s 266 runs in boundaries against India and John Edrich’s 238 runs in boundaries against New Zealand, Sangakkara become the third batsman to score most runs with boundaries with his 232 runs.
