Mahela Jayawardene became the first batsman to score 1000 runs in World T20

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene had the perfect farewell to their T20I careers when they lifted the World T20 trophy on Sunday, defeating India by 6 wickets in the final.

On a personal note, where Sangakkara was awarded the Man of the Match trophy for his half-century, Jayawardene too had an individual record to celebrate on the day. When he steered a delivery from Mohit Sharma to third-man region in the 4th over, he became the first cricketer to score 1000 runs in World T20.

Jayawardene is the 2nd highest run-getter (1493) behind Brendon McCullum (2044) in T20 international cricket, but when it comes to the world event, Jayawardene is a clear first, with Chris Gayle (807) some distance behind him.
