Kumar Sangakkara departs after scoring 319

The day 2 belonged to Kumar Sangakkara, who recorded his maiden Test triple century. He scored 319 runs from 482 balls with 32 fours and 8 sixes.

Sangakkara was the backbone of the Sri Lankan innings. His 319 put the visitors in a commanding position with a huge total of 587 in the first innings. Mahela Jayawardene also scored a useful 72 runs and put on a partnership of 178 runs with Sangakkara, which is the highest partnership in the match so far.

Sri Lanka resumed on day 2 with 314/5 from 92.0 overs with Sangakkara on 160 and Kithuruwan Vithanage still to get-off the mark.

Shamsur Rahman kept wicket in place of Mushfiqur Rahim on Day 2. At drinks in the first session Sri Lanka were at 392/5 in 108.0 overs with Sangakkara on 192 and Vithanage on 34. Both of them were rotating the strike well and the scoreboard kept on ticking. Both of them put on 90 runs for the sixth wicket before Nasir Hossain trapped Vithanage lbw for 35 runs.

The new batsman was Dilruwan Perera, whose innings lasted only for 3 deliveries for 1 run until he was trapped lbw by the left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan. By the time, Sangakkara reached 200 from 301 balls.

Sri Lanka went for lunch with 440 runs on the board and 3 wickets in hand.

Sangakkara and Ajanta Mendis added 100 runs for the 8th wicket, in which unsurprisingly Sangakkara was the dominant partner. Soon after the pair put on 100 runs, Mendis was dismissed for 47 runs by Shakib Al Hasan. In the first ball of 146th over, Bangladesh were charged 5 penalty runs for ball striking fielding team’s helmet.

With the no-11 batsman at the other end, Sanga reached his 300 from 447 balls with 30 fours and 8 sixes. Sangakkara was dismissed for 319 by Nasir Hossain and the Sri Lankan innings comes to an end with a huge total of 587 runs on the board and the tea was taken.

In the very first over of the Bangladeshi innings, Suranga Lakmal got one to stay low and rattle Tamim Iqbal‘s stumps. But after that, Imrul Kayes who was playing his first Test after two years, and Shamsur Rahman have taken the home side to 86 for 1. They are lucky too, since both batsmen were dropped once. But still Bangladesh are trailing by 501 runs and with 3 days left, they have to bat really well to save this Test match.
