Australian keeper Matthew Wade suffers broken collarbone

Australia’s ODI and T20 wicketkeeper Matthew Wade was forced out of Victoria’s Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia with a broken collarbone while batting in the nets at the MCG, reports ESPN Cricinfo.

Wade, who is Victoria’s captain, won the toss on Saturday morning and elected to bat, but was hit while batting in the nets before play. Cricket Victoria confirmed that he had gone for scans immediately and had returned to the ground.

Victoria’s physiotherapist Nick Adcock said: "Matt will get further medical advice on Monday to determine the extent of the injury and recovery period.”

The injury will come as a blow to the 27-year-old, who was hoping to make it into the Australian Test squad on the back of a solid Shield season. Although he has played 12 Tests, the last of them was more than two years ago, against India.

Since then, Peter Nevill has taken over the gloves following Brad Haddin’s retirement, but Nevill’s place in the Test side is far from permanent. Wade, who is Australia’s first-choice ODI and T20 wicketkeeper was hoping to become an automatic pick across all three formats.

"I feel like if I string a few good games together I'm definitely up for selection," Wade said on SEN radio on Friday. "I had a good chat with [selector] Trevor Hohns on the Australia A tour three or four months ago. He said we're going to pick you in the one-dayers and T20s but we want you to keep pushing for Test selection, don't think that part of the game is gone for you, which is always nice to hear from a selector.

"If I could get a bat in Shield cricket it would help. I haven't had a hit this year in two games, so if I can get a hit and put runs on the board and keep keeping well, I'm sure opportunities will come my way.”

In Wade’s absence, match referee Bob Stratford approved keeper Aaron Ayre’s inclusion into the side. The 23-year-old was making his first-class debut.

Peter Siddle, who was in contention for a place in the Australian side for the second Test against New Zealand that started on Friday, will captain Victoria in the game. Siddle was released from the squad to play for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield.
