Most consecutive wins in World Cup matches for India and other teams

MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina
MS Dhoni has led India to 11 consecutive World Cup victories so far

India is having a great run at the ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. They have beaten all the teams they faced so far including top teams like South Africa, and Pakistan. Seven matches, seven straight victories plus dismissing the opponents in all the seven matches sums up India’s performance at the tournament so far.

The subcontinent nation had won their last four matches in the last World Cup as well which include the last match of the group stage and then the quarter-final, semi-final and the final. Thus, India now has 11 consecutive victories in World Cup matches.

How many teams have won 11 or more consecutive matches in World Cups? The obvious answer should be Australia, who won the 2003 and 2007 World Cup undefeated all through; apart from Australian team, any other team?

No. Apart from Australia no one has won even won 10 consecutive World Cup matches. Australia won 25 consecutive matches from 1999 to 2011. India has 11 and the tally is unbroken still. If India wins the World Cup, they will have 13 consecutive victories in World Cup matches in 9 victories without any loss in this World Cup.

West Indies won all their first nine matches in World Cups (1975 and 1979) before losing to India in their first match of the 1983 World Cup thus ending a nine-match winning streak in World Cups. Since then, the best they have done is six consecutive victories, which they achieved in the third World Cup (1983). They never won more than four matches on the trot after that.

New Zealand had won all their first seven matches of the 1992 World Cup which they co-hosted along with Australia. They lost to Pakistan in the last league match and then in the semi-finals to the same opponents to bring the curtains down on their World Cup campaign.

India lost to Australia in their second match of the 2003 World Cup and then won eight straight matches but lost in the final, once again to Australia.
