Not Karachi, Ranchi - MS Dhoni tells a tale of confusion over hometown

MS Dhoni – from Ranchi or Karachi?

Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has put Ranchi on the world map and made the Jharkhan capital a known name in cricketing circles. Speaking at the inauguration of Country Cricket Club at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) Stadium, Dhoni reflected on the times when people were so clueless about the city that they confused it with Karachi in Pakistan!

“Just before my debut I was in Kenya. When I scored a century several people asked me where I belong to. When I said Ranchi, they said, okay, after partition your Mummy and Papa must have come to this side. I said not Karachi, Ranchi (confusing Ranchi with Karachi),” Dhoni said. He said he managed to stop any further conversation and moved on.

Times have changed now and the Indian skipper’s hometown is longer an unknown name.

“Whichever foreign player I interacted with, everyone has said this is one of the best stadiums in India and among the top two in the world where cricket is played,” Dhoni said. “When I first saw the site of this stadium it was difficult to imagine that the stadium can be like this,” Dhoni said at the function.

Rested for the recently concluded Bangladesh series, Dhoni was sharing his experience after JSCA president Amitabh Choudhary said that the cricketer had made the city of Ranchi popular.
