Mumbai Indians head coach John Wright expressed his delight at the appointment of retired Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar as the icon of the franchise. The former Indian coach also sang praises of team captain Rohit Sharma, who took the team to a double – IPL and Champions League triumphs in 2013 – in his very first year as a captain.

Speaking about Tendulkar, who had represented the Mumbai Indians in the first 6 years, Wright said: “Sachin is a big part of our franchise and should be here. It will be great to see him again and it will be great to have him around,”

With the first phase of the IPL being held at the United Arab Emirates, pitches are expected to assist the spinners. Wright, however, highlighting the presence of the spin duo of Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha, said: “There are some good spinners and we are pleased about it. They did brilliantly last time around and I know they are keen to have another crack at the IPL. Harbhajan, Ojha and a couple of youngsters will be fighting for positions as well. We will never mind a wicket that turns.”

Heaping praises on the way Rohit has led the team so far, he said: “Rohit led the side marvellously. He led us well with the bat and was tactically very aware. You can say it was very smart captaincy. He also had a great season with India. I’m pleased to see him lead the team again.”
