An Open Letter to Yuvraj Singh thanking him for his contribution to Indian Cricket

Yuvraj Singh playing for India in the 2012 World T20 Cup

Dear Yuvraj Singh,

Greetings!

If we try and spend some time across the multiple search engines that we have across the world, we would find a billion words etched in your name. Your enigmatic attitude is something which has defined you and has also distinguished you from the rest. You have been a champion player and have been a warrior for our country.

You have held the Indian fortress upright for over a decade and this bit is just to thank you for your contribution to Indian cricket. There were times when the Indian fielding was considered as a matter of laughing stock for many. It is you who has redefined Indian fielding and it would not be wrong if I go on and say that your advent into Indian cricket has been a turning point for Indian fielding.

Yuvraj Singh standing at point was a treat to watch. Those impossible catches that you have taken in your career justify the fact that you have turned the tide for Indian fielding. People said you were India’s Jonty Rhodes, I would say you were even better than him. With the kind of grounds India has in domestic and junior level cricket, it is known you have come out triumphant despite the multiple cuts and injuries that you must have got during the first stages of your career.

We boast of two shining metals in our cabinet. That would not have been possible had you not been at your best in those two big tournaments. Hitting six sixes of Broad or playing like a champion in 2011 World Cup, Yuvi you are a big tournament player. This shows that you have nerves of steel.

Amidst a tournament if somebody is suddenly seen vomiting blood but still takes his country through, he has to be a champion. Yuvi, you have been an inspiration for those cancer patients who give up. You have shown that nothing in this world can deter one if the determination is as strong as a rock. The whole of India celebrated each time we trounced oppositions in the 2011 World Cup. Take a bow Yuvi for producing something that shall remain unmatched forever. Nobody knew that you had cancer. You knew it though, and you were up for the toughest challenge that had been thrown to you.

It is true that off late you have not been in the most sublime touch. But a wise man had once said “Form is temporary, class is permanent”. It is a matter of few innings which shall bring back your Midas touch and you shall be again seen roaring in India colours.

Yuvi, the kind of wrath that you faced after that particular innings in the T20 world cup final was disheartening. It was not justified at all. Even in the IPL you showed flashes of form. This justifies that you are not over yet.It is true that all your fans have been saddened by your recent outings. But we have not lost hope because we are sure that Yuvraj Singh is going to come back and come back hard.

If somebody can come out to bat after having survived cancer and whack a few sixes on his international comeback, he has to be special. Yuvi, whenever India has needed you, you have come out all guns blazing. No cricketer on this earth has the persona to match the fighting spirit that you possess. It’s a delight to watch you hitting those mammoth sixes. It’s a delight to see the frown on the bowlers’ face when they bowl at you. It’s a delight to see you on the field. It’s a delight that we breathe the same air as you do.

So for you Yuvi, keep preaching and worshipping the game with the same level of dedication and God shall take care of the rest. After all we want to see Yuvraj Singh to repeat his heroics in next year’s T20 World Cup and the 2019 ODI World Cup. You will soon be back hitting those towering sixes and pulling off stunners standing at point.

Yuvi, thank you so much for giving our generation a chance to witness India lifting the Cup a couple of times. Thanks for all the entertainment.

Yours sincerely,

A Fan
