Misbah-ul-Haq set to lead Pakistan in the upcoming WC

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Shahryar Khan has said that veteran batsman Misbah-ul-Haq will captain Pakistan in the 2015 World Cup in February. The 40-year-old suffered a hamstring injury during the second ODI against New Zealand, and it wasn’t certain as to whether or not he would be ready in time for the tournament.

Khan said that this was the first time that Misbah had suffered an injury during his career, and he was hopeful of him getting fully fit before the event.

"This is the first time that Misbah has copped an injury in his career and he is working hard to recover from it and I am confident he will be ready in time for the World Cup," he said on Tuesday.

"There is no need for concern. I have spoken to Misbah and he is confident his injury will heal in time and he will be ready for the World Cup. He is a thorough professional and when he says he will be fit I am ready to back him all the way," Shahryar added.

A specialist, however, noted that Misbah had suffered a Grade 2 injury, which meant that it could recur anytime.

Khan also said that the selectors would announce the World Cup squad on January 7 in consultation with Misbah and head coach Waqar Younis.

The 80-year-old acknowledged that the team’s ODI performances recently haven’t been as good as their displays in Test cricket.

"If we speak honestly our ODI performances have not been up to the mark and we need to improve a lot in many areas. But what is encouraging is that the players are trying hard and I am sure when the World Cup comes around they will be ready for the challenge," he said.

He also said that the decision to hold fitness tests for the players was taken by the selectors and staff at the National Cricket Academy, Lahore. The tests will be held on December 27 and 28.

“I am sure it is good for the players. We have a bunch of talented players and if they are 100 percent fit they should do well in the World Cup," he said.

On Monday, Misbah had thanked Khan for supporting him at a time when he was in poor form.

"It was the PCB chairman who lifted my spirits and showed faith in me at a time when I was struggling for form and not getting runs," Misbah said.
