Indian leg spinner Piyush Chawla, currently playing for English county side Somerset, scored a brilliant knock of 100 runs in just 140 balls.

Somerset were in trouble when the third-placed team Middlesex’s bowlers destroyed the Somerset batting line-up as they scored 211 runs with the loss of 7 wickets.

The 24-year-old Indian, coming in at number 9, was involved in a brilliant partnership of 107 runs with fellow team-mate Alex Barrow to prevent Somerset from the brink of an early defeat as they managed a pretty formidable total of 332/8 at the end of day 1.

Chawla continued from his overnight score of 58 to notch up his maiden county century on the second day. His ton consisted of 10 fours and 4 sixes.

During the press conference at the end of day one, Chawla hoped to add more runs to pile pressure on the opposition: At one point, we looked like we would reach about 250, But now, if we can add some more runs, we can put them under the pump.”

Somerset are facing Middlesex, placed third on the table, and are struggling to keep their title hopes alive.
