Proud to be Player of the Tournament, says Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli dragged India into the semis with his incredible batting

Although West Indies took home the 2016 World Twenty20 title on Sunday night by beating England in the final, India too laid hands on some silverware as Virat Kohli was named the Player of the Tournament.

Kohli was exceptional throughout the tournament and almost single-handedly carried the Indian team into the semi-finals. The star batsman was the highest run scorer in this edition of the World Twenty20 since the Super 10 stage began and ended with 273 runs in 5 matches at a phenomenal average of 136.50 with 3 half-centuries.

This is Virat Kohli’s second straight Player of the Tournament award in the World Twenty20 after bagging the coveted prize in the 2014 edition. Kohli acknowledged his win by stating, “Although I’m disappointed that we were not able to make it through to the final and win the ICC World Twenty20 title on home soil, I'm proud to be named player of the tournament.”

The ace Indian player was happy with the success of the tournament and said, “As a team, we have all loved the experience of playing in this event in front of big, passionate home crowds and I'm pleased the tournament in India has been successfully staged.”

“And I'd like to add my congratulations to the West Indies men’s and women’s squads for their successes,” he added lauding the men and women from the Caribbean for their success.

Other names that did the rounds while making the decision were Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal, the tournament’s overall highest run-scorer, and England’s Joe Root. However, Virat Kohli’s contribution to his team’s campaign was deemed to be far greater and he was announced the winner.
