Gautam Gambhir struck an unbeaten century as Delhi reached 260/6 on day 1 of their Ranji Trophy fixture against Saurashtra in New Delhi.

At the end of day’s play, the Delhi captain was on 123* after bringing up his 38th first-class century. He had to dig in at the beginning of his innings as pacers Sudeep Tyagi and Abhishek Bhatt were bowling well in tandem.

Once the left-handed batsman saw off the new ball, he started playing more shots and struck 14 boundaries and 2 sixes. He did receive a huge reprieve though, when Saurashtra wicket-keeper Sagar Jogiyani missed an easy stumping off the bowling of spinner Kamlesh Makvana.

Gambhir, who was ignored in India’s list of probables for the World Cup, rarely looked in trouble after that and put on an impressive 88-run stand with Rajat Bhatia. Bhatia was later dismissed for 47.

On the other, Virender Sehwag, who also didn’t find a place in India’s list of probables for the World Cup, was run out for a mere 9 by Sheldon Jackson. The 36-year-old looked in decent touch and hit two boundaries during 21-minute stay at the crease.

Brief Scores

Delhi 260/6 (Gambhir 123*, Bhatia 47, Tyagi 2/45 Bhatt 2/52) vs Saurashtra
