Mysuru, Jan 22 (IANS) Baroda, after making 335 in their first innings, had defending champions Karnataka on the ropes reducing the hosts to 233 for six in reply at stumps on the second day of the Group A Ranji Trophy league match here on Thursday.

The Karnataka batting, which has been inconsistent through the current season, failed yet again with only Lokesh Rahul contributing something of substance with a gritty 89 (160b, 10x4, 1x6).

The early loss of opener Robin Uthappa (0) in the very second over of the innings and Samarth R (15) in the eighth, pushed the hosts on the defensive while some of the other batsmen had good starts but failed to convert them into big scores.

Rahul, back in the team after returning from the Test series in Australia, held the innings together with a typically solid knock as he put on 80 runs for the third wicket with Manish Pandey (34) and 58 for the fourth in the company of Karun Nair (38).

The exit of Rahul at 165, put Baroda firmly in control as the home team lost wickets at regular intervals thereafter to finish the day still 102 runs in arrears with Shreyas Gopal (26 not out), who has had a good run with the bat this season, at the crease.

For Baroda, seamer Sagar Mangalorkar and left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh took two wickets apiece while Irfan Pathan and fellow-left-arm pacer Gagandeep Singh came away with one each.
