Lalit Modi: Will he rise to cricketing prominence again?

The impasse surrounding BCCI and Lalit Modi’s controversial contesting of the RCA (Rajasthan Cricket Association) elections held on 19th December, 2013, on the back of the Rajasthan Sports Act is soon expected to end following the intervention of the Supreme Court.

BCCI had challenged the grounds of Modi’s contesting of the election though according to the Rajasthan Sports Act, 2005, RCA comes under its purview and not under the BCCI’s ambit. Of the 33 seats in the RCA, it is expected that Modi, despite his recent ban by the BCCI, will be the unanimous victor drawing overwhelming votes and support.

Modi’s participation in the elections drew BCCI’s ire which subsequently moved the Supreme Court petitioning against the Sports Act. Though the RCA elections were conducted under the monitoring eye of two retired SC judges, it is to BCCI’s belief that the possibility of Modi coming back to power would spell further trouble to the already chaotic Indian cricket. There again, while Lalit Modi doesn’t reside in India anymore, the BCCI feels that his influences could destabilise Indian cricket even more. That said, it also has to be noted that Modi himself has moved the Supreme Court questioning BCCI’s decision about banning him for life.

As of now the stalemate still continues with the Supreme Court’s deferring the announcement of the result of the RCA elections to 17th January, 2014. The Supreme Court announced that it will consider the petitions filed by BCCI and Kishore Rungta, the current RCA president if Lalit Modi gets additional vote counts.

All parties involved will be keenly following the proceedings, considering that a decision favouring any one party would account for huge impacts and possible changes for Indian cricket.
