Reports: Sunil Gavaskar demands Rs 1.9 crore from BCCI for serving as IPL-7 chief

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a remuneration of Rs 1.9 crore for serving as the president of the Indian Premier League (IPL) during the 7^th edition of the lucrative T20 league that was held last year. On a directive from the Supreme Court of India, Gavaskar had agreed to become the IPL chief. The apex court, in turn, had asked the BCCI to compensate the batting great as he was foregoing his media commitments for that period of holding office.

According to a senior BCCI official, present at the working committee meeting in Kolkata on Sunday, Gavaskar recently wrote a letter to the BCCI seeking his compensation to be settled. Apart from his commentary duties, he regularly appears on NDTV as an expert and also writes columns for various leading newspapers.

"Gavaskar has written a letter to the BCCI. In the letter, he has sought an amount to the tune of Rs 1.90 crore which is equivalent to the money that he had to forego during the period as he couldn't take up his media assignments which includes TV commentary, writing columns and also acting as a media pundit," he said.

However, when asked whether the amount requested by Gavaskar had been sanctioned, he replied: "Not as of now. But obviously, he needs to be compensated as there is a Supreme Court directive and we need to follow that. But this letter will be placed before the finance committee, which will approve an amount.

"The amount that Gavaskar would get could be exactly what he has demanded or less depending upon what the finance committee's recommendations are."
