Kohli for Dhoni?

Ahead of the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) Selection Committee meeting to pick India squad for the South Africa series, talks are growing that limited-overs skipper MS Dhoni might make way for Test captain Virat Kohli in ODIs as well, reports The New Indian Express.

According to the news site, selectors are thinking from a long run point of view, they find different personalities and difference in captaincy styles between Kohli and Dhoni and therefore, want Kohli to lead in the 50-over format as well.

The team selectors are expected to meet around September 15 to pick the squad for the 'Gandhi-Mandela' series that involves three T20 internationals, five ODIs and four Tests. The energy-sapping 72-day tour will begin with the limited-overs leg from October 2.

“Even in the previous selection meeting there were talks about Kohli being named captain for all formats. But it is also worth keeping in mind that Dhoni is the most successful India captain ever and Kohli is just finding his feet as far as captaincy goes," a source told New Indian Express. "With India set to play mainly at home next year, it will only be an advantage for Kohli to take over the reins now rather than in an away series. Dhoni might continue to lead in T20s though.”

Dhoni played his last match during three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in Dhaka in June. Reports suggest that it is unknown if the selectors will announce the squads for all the T20Is, ODIs and Tests together.

If selectors go with forward with the decision which reports suggest, this might prove a good step ahead of Indian cricket team future as Kohli will get his time to get settled as captain in the shorter format as well before the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
