Richie Benaud injured in car crash in Sydney; in stable condition

Richie Benaud

Cricketing icon and highly regarded analyst and commentator, Australian Richie Benaud was injured in an accident in Sydney this morning.

Driving a 1963 Sunbeam Alpine, he suffered chest and shoulder injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital. He’s said to be in stable condition currently and is in good spirits.

Telegraph Sport quoted the Australian legend via Channel 9, saying, “No one else was injured … I was more worried about the car than myself.”

Known for his brilliant leg-spin bowling and lower order attacking batting, Benaud also captained the Australian team in late 1950s and early 1960s. He retired in 1964 and has since become one of the most respected figures off the field.

He’s been called ‘perhaps the most influential cricketer and cricket personality since the Second World War’ by Gideon Haigh.
