Rohit Sharma's debut in International Cricket

Rohit Sharma debut

Rohit Sharma’s debut came against Ireland after India’s disastrous World Cup campaign in 2007. We all know has a natural ability to play some wonderful classical strokes combined with lazy elegance which has also proved to be his downfall a number of times. He is only the third batsman to score a double century in ODIs. After Ravindra Jadeja he is the one who has been subjected to the most number of online jokes and memes. He has is probably one of those cricketers on whom the selectors and captain have banked their trust on as the prodigy to be the legend in making. How long will it take him to prove that he can be a consistent performer is a different issue altogether.

Rohit came in to the domestic circuit in the Deodhar Trophy where his impressive performances earned him a spot for the Champions Trophy probables. He then impressed many on the New Zealand tour with India A where he made his first class debut. He then was picked for the Mumbai Ranji team for the 2006/07 season. After a good domestic season he was picked for India’s tour of Ireland where he made his ODI debut against Ireland on June 23, 2007, but did not get to bat.

In that match he was slated to come in at number 7 as a finisher, but unfortunately for him, India’s top 3 chased down the target easily against the Irish bowlers.

He got his real recognition when he scored an unbeaten half century against South Africa and a few more cameos in the World T20 in 2007. He got a chance to play ODIs in Austalia in triangular series where he was not really great but put up a commendable show being an young man. In 2010, he lost a chance to make his Test debut when he got injured just before the match in the warm-up session.

After a series of serious failures his continuous retention in the team raised many question but the skipper had trust in him and he proved his captain right by showing what he is capable of and scored a double ton in ODIs by opening the innings for India. He finally made his Test debut in 2013 during Sachin’s farewell series and scored back to back tons.
